Washington tribes would lose their exclusive rights to slot machines, and their dominance in the state gaming market, if Initiative 892 passes.
I-892 is one of the biggest proposed expansions of gaming in state history. If approved, it would allow an unlimited number of slot machines at bars, restaurants, cardrooms, charities and bingo halls all over the state.
Washington tribes and their allies have spent more than $5 million against I-892. This is the most raised in opposition to an initiative in state history, The Seattle Times reported.
Washington tribes currently control at least 53 percent of the gaming market, the paper said. This figure is based on slot machine revenue and does not include other games tribes offer.
I-892 is pitched as a way to lower property taxes for individuals but opponents say it will turn the state into Nevada.
