North Dakota lawmakers are drafting a bill that would require legislative approval of all gaming compacts between the state and tribes.
Lawmakers say they want to act now rather than during a crisis. Currently, they have no final say over compacts but they can attend negotiating sessions.
The state has 10-year agreements with the tribes. One tribe, the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, wants to negotiate with the state for an urban casino.
