Commissioners in Doa Ana County, New Mexico, have postponed discussion of a possible off-reservation casino as opposition mounts to the project.
Jemez Pueblo and an art dealer want to acquire land for a casino near Las Cruces. But the tribe and dealer Jerry Peters haven't approached the county about development, so some officials thought a vote was premature.
Two state lawmakers are already opposing the idea because it would impact a non-Indian owned gaming facility in the area. The New Mexico Coalition Against Gambling is urging Gov. Bill Richardson (D), whose support for the project is vital, to reject off-reservation gaming.
