Jemez Pueblo seeks casino in southern New Mexico

Jemez Pueblo of New Mexico is seeking to build an off-reservation casino in the southern part of the state.

With the backing of art dealer Gerald Peters, the tribe wants to acquire 124 acres near Las Cruces. The location is near the state border with Texas and with Mexico.

The tribe would need state and federal approval to acquire off-reservation land. The casino partnership is preparing an application to send to the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The Mescalero Apache Nation operates a Class III in the southern part of the state. The Tigua Tribe in El Paso operates a Class II facility.
