Hearing on status of Keetowah Band casino delayed

A state court hearing on the legality of the United Keetowah Band's casino has been delayed.

The hearing was to take place today. But the state has asked a federal court to rule that the casino is not operating on Indian land.

In September 2000, the National Indian Gaming Commission concluded the casino was not on Indian land. NIGC referred the matter to the state.

The Cherokee Nation wants the casino shut down. The tribe has not given its consent to have the land where the facility is located placed into trust for the Keetowahs.
