A gaming initiative sponsored by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians contains a provision that would nullify a rival initiative that would expand non-Indian gaming.
The tribe's Proposition 70 is up against Proposition 68, which would allow slot machines at non-Indian card clubs and racetracks if tribes refuse to share casino revenues. Both were approved for the November ballot.
But in the event both receive a majority of votes, Proposition 70 contains a provision to cancel out Proposition 68.
Tribes are mobilizing against Proposition 68. Californians Against the Deceptive Gambling Proposition involves some of the tribes that signed new compacts with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R), who says he will raise upwards of $20 million to defeat 70 and 68.
