Final returns show members of the Hopi Tribe of Arizona rejecting gaming by 57 percent. The tally was 1,051 to 784, according to the Associated Press, with only about 20 percent of eligible voters participating.
Tribal members went to the polls on the reservation yesterday. They were asked to vote yes or no on entering the casino business.
Tribal leaders say gaming could restore an expected $7.7 million loss in royalties from the potential shut down of the Peabody coal mines.
