The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians has joined the battle against a California initiative that threatens tribal gaming.
The tribe filed suit yesterday in an appeals court to stop a group of card clubs and racetracks from putting their slot machine initiative on the November ballot. On Tuesday, five other tribes filed in the state Supreme Court.
The tribes say the initiative would break federal law by requiring tribes to share 25 percent of their slot machine revenues. If for any reason the tribes do not agree, or the Bureau of Indian Affairs rejects the arrangement, the card clubs and racetracks will receive slot machine rights.
