The Lac du Flambeau Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa Indians is sort of in a hurry to develop a casino in Shullsburg, Wisconsin.
The tribe has asked the Bureau of Indian Affairs to place about 93 acres into trust. According to The Monroe Times, the BIA wants more information about the request but the tribe doesn't plan on submitting anything until a compact is signed with the state.
The tribe is negotiating with Gov. Jim Doyle (D), who has signed several other compacts with tribes. A tribal spokesperson said the parties have until July to sign but "are in no hurry." Still, the tribe says if everything isn't in place by 2005, it will drop the casino plans.
The tribe has agreed to pay Lafayette County $4 million per year for 20 years.
