Foundation sued for withdrawing $15M offer
Thursday, March 6, 2003

The Northwest Area Foundation is being sued for withdrawing a $15 million offer to reduce poverty among Indians, Hispanics and whites in Yakama Nation country in Washington.

The foundation wanted the community to decide how to spend the money. But President Karl Stauber said there were too many divisions, apparently racial and ethnic. He also said the Yakama Nation never approved of the work.

Separately, the foundation is donating $20 million to the Indian Land Tenure Foundation to keep Indian land in Indian ownership.
