Pot tribal chairman suppresses opponents
Wednesday, February 5, 2003

Citizen Potatawatomi Chairman John "Rocky" Barrett has blocked the views of his political opponents and is behind a push to charge seven tribal members with criminal violations, The Daily Oklahoman reports.

The seven allegedly placed a political ad on a tribal members-only web site that documented Barrett's actions. Barnett wrote a letter to the U.S. Army Reserve, claiming that a tribal member in the unit cannot run for tribal office. William John Rodd was running for vice chairman against an incumbent who is a Barnett ally.

Barnett then blocked the ad from appearing in the tribally-owned newspaper. He also got a Bureau of Indian Affairs Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) court to prevent the seven from placing it elsewhere.

The seven have been charged with defamation of character and contempt of court.
