33 new cases, 48,470 recoveries, and two new deaths related to COVID-19

WINDOW ROCK, Arizona – On Tuesday, the Navajo Department of Health, in coordination with the NavajoEpidemiology Center and the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, reported 33 new COVID-19 cases for the NavajoNation and two deaths. The total number of deaths is 1,625. The report indicates that 48,470 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. 482,215 COVID-19 tests have been administered. The overall total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 51,279, including 49 delayed reported cases.

Navajo Nation COVID-19 positive cases by Service Unit:

• Chinle Service Unit: 9,695
• Crownpoint Service Unit: 4,973
• Ft. Defiance Service Unit: 5,288
• Gallup Service Unit: 8,625
• Kayenta Service Unit: 4,812
• Shiprock Service Unit: 9,433
• Tuba City Service Unit: 5,639
• Winslow Service Unit: 2,792

* 22 residences with COVID-19 positive cases are not specific enough to place them accurately in a Service Unit.

On Tuesday, the state of Arizona reported 3,790 new cases, the state of Utah reported 1,341 cases, and New Mexico reported 1,412 cases. On Tuesday, Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer distributed protective face masks, and other PPE supplies to Navajo families and individuals in the community of To’Hajiilee, N.M.

“The Omicron variant continues to spread more easily than the original virus that causes COVID-19 and the Delta variant. According to health professionals, Omicron infections may cause more mild illnesses; however, some people may still be at risk for severe symptoms and hospitalizations. Getting your COVID-19 vaccine and booster shots is important to protect yourself and others. Please remain diligent and keep wearing your mask to push back on the virus,” said President Nez.

Health care facilities on the Navajo Nation continue to administer COVID-19 vaccines. If you would like to receive one of the COVID-19 vaccines, please contact your health care provider and schedule an appointment.

“We pray for all of the families that have lost their loved ones. We are seeing good signs with today’s number of new cases, but please remember all of the people missing their parents, grandparents, siblings, and others due to COVID-19. Please be safe, continue to pray, and keep supporting one another,” said Vice President Lizer.
