159 new cases, 47,415 recoveries, and one death related to COVID-19

WINDOW ROCK, Arizona – On Friday, the Navajo Department of Health, in coordination with the Navajo Epidemiology Center and the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, reported 159 new COVID-19 cases for the Navajo Nation and one death. The total number of deaths is now 1,621. The report indicates that 47,415 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. 479,876 COVID-19 tests have been administered. The overall total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 50,839, including 52 delayed reported cases.

Navajo Nation COVID-19 positive cases by Service Unit:

  • Chinle Service Unit: 9,618
  • Crownpoint Service Unit: 4,911
  • Ft. Defiance Service Unit: 5,274
  • Gallup Service Unit: 8,524
  • Kayenta Service Unit: 4,754
  • Shiprock Service Unit: 9,350
  • Tuba City Service Unit: 5,621
  • Winslow Service Unit: 2,765

* 22 residences with COVID-19 positive cases are not specific enough to place them accurately in a Service Unit.

On Friday, the state of Arizona reported 9,077 new cases, the state of Utah reported 2,808 cases, and New Mexico reported 2,104 cases. Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez will attend a COVID-19 vaccination event at St. Bonaventure Mission School in Thoreau, N.M. on Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. (MST). 

“The COVID-19 vaccines are saving lives and preventing severe illness among our people who are fully vaccinated. Our health care facilities and frontline warriors are doing a great job making the vaccines widely available to our Navajo people. Our elders continue to lead us and set an example for the rest of our people with an 88-percent vaccination rate for those who are 65-years and older. Please continue to take precautions, get vaccinated and a booster shot, and keep praying for your loved ones and all of our frontline warriors who are fighting for us,” said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez.

Health care facilities on the Navajo Nation continue to administer COVID-19 vaccines. If you would like to receive one of the COVID-19 vaccines, please contact your health care provider and schedule an appointment.

“With the guidance of our public health experts, the strength of our elders, and the faith in our prayers, we will continue to emerge from this pandemic stronger than before. As leaders, we continue to pray for our people especially those who grieve for the loss of a loved one. We stand with you and you are in our prayers each and every day,” said Vice President Myron Lizer.
