The Pueblo of Laguna hailed the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccine this week. The doses arrived in the tribal community on December 16, 2020, according to a post on social media.

“We are blessed to have the resource of a vaccine provided by the Creator in this never before experienced health pandemic,” the post read.

According to the post, the tribe is one of first two Indian nations in New Mexico to receive doses of the vaccine.

“We encourage all tribal members to rise above the misperceptions and rumors of the safety & effectiveness of this vaccine,” the post read. “Our top leaders, the Governor and 1st Lt Governor, and elders are some of the first to step up to receive this vaccine as a blessing from the Creator.”

As of December 16, the tribe has seen 427 COVID-19 positive cases, according to the latest figures. Of those, 51 are considered active.

The tribe has seen 14 deaths from COVID-19.

“This virus continues to be more aggressive with two individuals hospitalized and placed in the Intensive Care Unit,” an update from December 18 reads.
