National Indian Health Board to Testify Before the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights Evaluating the Impacts of COVID-19 on Tribes
WASHINGTON, DC—July 15, 2020— The National Indian Health Board (NIHB) Chairman William Smith from the Valdez Native Tribe of Alaska will testify before the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights as part of a virtual public briefing, titled: COVID-19 in Indian Country: The Impact of Federal Broken Promises on Native Americans. The virtual briefing is scheduled for Friday, July 17, 2020 at 10:00 am ET. The briefing is open to the public and members of the media are encouraged to tune in.
NIHB Chairman Smith joins Tribal leaders and experts who will provide virtual testimony on how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted Tribal communities with respect to healthcare, housing and infrastructure components such as access to water and broadband. Panelists will also discuss whether the federal government is meeting its obligations to American Indian and Alaska Native Peoples during this current public health crisis.
Other panelists include: Geoffrey Blackwell, Chief Strategy Officer, AMERIND Risk Management Corporation; Chief Lynn Malerba, Secretary, USET Sovereignty Protection Fund; Jonathan Nez, President, Navajo Nation; Fawn Sharp, President, National Congress of American Indians, and Francys Crevier, Executive Director, National Council of Urban Indian Health.
