1.  EDUCATION:
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT FRIDAY: IDENTIFYING INDIRECT AND DIRECT COSTS TO MAXIMIZE NEGOTIATING POWER
NAFOA is continuing our Financial Management Friday series this week. Join us for on Friday, May 15, at 1:00 pm Eastern Time for a webinar, “Identifying Indirect and Direct Costs to Maximize Negotiating Power.” Panelists will discuss negotiating indirect cost rates and best practices of working to get the best and honest outcome for your tribe while still fulfilling the varied grant objectives. Register today.
 

2.  POLICY:
PARTICIPATE IN SURVEY ON TRIBAL INCLUSION IN THE SBA PAYCHECK PROTECTION PROGRAM
NAFOA is seeking to better understand the extent of tribal participation in the Small Business Administration (SBA) Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).

We respectfully ask each entity that applied, considered, or otherwise did not apply for an SBA PPP Loan fill out the survey. There are questions for all entities included in the survey.

Any information collected through this survey will be kept confidential and will not be shared with anyone outside of NAFOA. Any public dissemination of the results of the survey will be anonymous and in a manner that does not allow the identification of any specific tribal government.
 

3. IN THE NEWS:

LOW-INCOME AND COMMUNITIES OF COLOR AT HIGHER RISK OF SERIOUS ILLNESS IF INFECTED WITH CORONAVIRUS

An article produced by the Kaiser Family Foundation investigated the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on low-income and communities of color. Their findings show that “more than one in three (34%) American Indian/Alaska Native non-elderly adults are at higher risk of serious illness if infected with the coronavirus; this share is greater than all other racial and ethnic groups.” There are many factors in play affecting AIAN communities including underlying health conditions, disparities in health care, and other socio-economic factors.

To address these disparities, the article suggests “comprehensive nationwide data, broken down by race and ethnicity and income, are needed to understand how COVID-19 is affecting communities in the U.S. and how best to target coronavirus testing and other resources accordingly.” Read more.
 

4. OPPORTUNITIES:
REDW SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE UNDERGRAD AND GRAD STUDENTS
The REDW Scholarship is for undergraduate and graduate student who are enrolled members of a federally recognized American Indian tribe or Alaska Native group or a state-recognized tribe in the U.S. OR provide documentation of ancestry to possession of one-fourth degree Indian blood of a state or federally recognized tribe in Arizona or New Mexico. REDW is looking for full-time and degree-seeking college juniors and seniors and graduate students who hold a current cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher for one of the following fields of study:

  • Undergraduate: Must be a full-time junior or senior who is pursuing a degree in accounting, financial or related business field
  • Graduate: Must be in a full-time master’s degree program pursuing a master’s in business administration, master’s of taxation or master’s of accountancy

NAFOA ORANGE BOOK AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE
The Financial Reporting and Information Guide for Tribal Governments and Enterprises (Orange Book)addresses the complex economic activity and related entity differences of tribal settings. It also presents an overview of the financial reporting framework in a tribal setting. The Orange Book includes ten chapters covering the unique operating environment of tribal governments from financial reporting with business activities to fiduciary activities to federal tax and information reporting.
