DAR’s Piestewa Peak Chapter Mask Sewing Efforts Reaches Over 1500 Donated

Scottsdale, Arizona – The Piestewa Peak Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) continues to lend a helping hand to healthcare and other essential workers on the front lines of the pandemic, ensuring residents and facilities have protective wear resources to face the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic. Several members of the Piestewa Peak Chapter responded to the medical mask shortage by hand-sewing masks to donate to local essential workers in the most need.

As of May 1, 2020, the Piestewa Peak Chapter of Scottsdale, AZ has sewn and donated 1578 masks and 790 other items of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE.)  Over 500 of those masks have been donated to the Navajo Nation Department of Health. Masks made by these DAR volunteers have also been donated to Arizona Army Reserve Soldiers currently deployed to Afghanistan, the Arizona State Veteran Home, the Mayo Clinic, Hospice of the Valley, and Phoenix Rescue Mission as well as to family, friends, and neighbors.

Arizona’s 41 DAR chapters combined have made and donated over 13,000 masks, the sixth highest number within DAR chapters in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Guam. Visit https://www.facebook.com/groups/ServiceToAmerica/ for up-to-date totals for the nationwide mask effort.

“I am exceptionally proud of what DAR members are accomplishing as part of a proud tradition of service that dates to our 1890 founding,” said Denise Doring VanBuren, DAR President General. “In difficult times like these, we know that it is not the emergency that defines us, but how we respond to it.”
