The Indian Health Service has updated its coronavirus testing data, showing results as of 7pm Eastern on April 8, 2020.
According to the data, a total of 9,932 people within the IHS system have been tested. Of those, 741 are positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. The figure represents an increase of 12 percent from the 661 cases previously reported.
Testing is finally ramping up in certain regions of the IHS. The Billings Area, for example, has administered more than 1,200 tests, a huge increase from the 383 reported just a few days ago.
The Billings Area serves more than 70,000 American Indians in Montana and Wyoming.
The Albuquerque Area also has seen an increase in coronavirus testing in recent days. The New Mexico Department of Health has stepped in to bring mobile testing to Pueblo communities, where outbreaks have been detected.
“Data is reported from IHS, tribal, and urban Indian organization facilities, though reporting by tribal and urban programs is voluntary,” the agency says on its website. “This is a rapidly evolving situation and the IHS will provide updated information as it becomes available and is verified.”
