Stan Lucero, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and former Pueblo of Laguna council member, passed away on April 5, 2020. Lucero was a husband, father, grandfather, Keres language teacher and mentor through the American Indian Science and Engineering Society Council of Elders.
Though the cause was not COVID-19, the pandemic has upended life for his family at Laguna Pueblo in New Mexico. Due to coronavirus restrictions, his loved ones will have to forego some traditional grieving ceremonies and practices in order to keep everyone in the community safe. Many others in Indian Country are experiencing the same hardships.
“Please remember my Dad with as many stories as you can,” daughter Shayai Lucero said on social media. “To our AISES family, he cherished every bit of time he spent with all the ‘Beautiful Nerds.'”
“We will have a huge memorial for everyone whose lives he touched when the pandemic passes,” Shayai wrote.
