In a video address on April 1, 2020, President Julian Bear Runner of the Oglala Sioux Tribe announced a number of actions being taken to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
A curfew on the Pine Ridge Reservation begins on April 2. It runs from 10pm to 6am, with businesses required to close by 8pm, Bear Runner said from the offices of KILI Radio.
A shelter in place order is also going into effect, Bear Runner said. People can leave their residences for valid reasons, such as obtaining health care or traveling for essential employment.
Bear Runner also announced border checkpoints on the reservation. A local firm called Canksa Yuha Protection Services will be overseeing the process.
