The Indian Health Service has updated its coronavirus testing data, reflecting the data reported as of 7pm Eastern on March 25, 2020.
According to the data, a total of 2,156 patients in the IHS system have been tested for the coronavirus. Of those, 83 people have tested positive for COVID-19.
A large number of tests — 1,125 — have returned negative, according to the IHS. Results from 948 tests are pending.
Nearly half of the tests have taken place in the Navajo Area of IHS. The IHS data shows 54 positive tests, which is lower than the 69 reported by the tribe. The difference can be attributed to the 7pm Eastern cutoff in the IHS data. The tribe updated its cases later in the evening on March 25.
The California Area and the Portland Area each have 10 cases, according to the data. Portland includes tribal and urban Indian communities in Idaho, Oregon and Washington
The IHS data is drawn from tests that occur within federally-run facilities. So it may not include all of the cases in Indian Country, such as those that have been reported separately by tribes.
“Data is reported from IHS, tribal, and urban Indian organization facilities, though reporting by tribal and urban programs is voluntary,” the agency notes.
