SFIS School Closure due to Health and Safety Precautions
SANTA FE, N.M. –
Today the SFIS Board of Trustees supported the Superintendent’s recommendation in an unanimous vote (7-0) to close school starting today, March 12, 2020 through the end of the scheduled spring break on April 19, 2020. Classes intend to resume on Monday, April 20, 2020.
The difficult decision was made as a precautionary measure to protect the health of students, staff, and tribal communities due to the COVID-19 outbreak in surrounding areas. At this point, we have no reported cases of COVID-19 at Santa Fe Indian School and no reported contact with anyone with the virus.
As we are a unique school community that transports students in and out of the Pueblos daily, we feel the prudent course is to focus on prevention by reducing student movement between multiple communities. Roughly, two-thirds of the student body of over 700, live in the dorms with most returning to their home communities on the weekend. One-third of students are day students who ride in daily on one of three northern or three southern Pueblo bus routes.
We remain committed to the education of our students and we will continue to provide educational services throughout the school closure.
Superintendent Roy M. Herrera, “The SFIS community is comprised of all of the tribes of New Mexico, including the 19 Pueblos, Navajos, and Apaches. In order to protect our students, staff, as well as the communities they come from we are taking proactive protective measures.”
High School Principal Faith Rosetta, “We will leverage our Google Classroom and Zoom distance learning capabilities so that instruction can continue remotely. Additionally, we are providing every student with a Chromebook.” SFIS is also developing a plan to ensure that all students have access to non-digital educational materials for those without home Internet access.
