AUGUST 4, 2000 Here is a recap of the Republican National Convention, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 31 - August 3. MONDAY - Focus on Education
The Convention begins with the Pledge of Allegiance by Justina Cristobal of Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico.
Platform adopted, which includes a section on Native Americans, self-determination, and self-sufficiency.
Retired General Colin Powell says the party has to reach out to all people, all the time. He criticizes some members of the party for their views on affirmative action.

Senator John McCain of Arizona addresses the convention, pledging to "serve" candidate Bush.
Considered by many in Indian Country to be a friend to tribes and sovereignty, McCain makes no mention of tribes or Native veterans during his speech on the military.

Rebecca Ann King, Chickasaw from Oklahoma, sings the National Anthem.
Former Defense Secretary Dick Cheney accepts the Vice-Presidential nomination.
Outside the convention, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians of California hold a lunch for Republican candidates attending the convention.

George W. Bush arrives and accepts his party's nomination.
Hispanic-Americans get plenty of attention with a speech by George P. Bush, George W.'s nephew, peppered with Spanish phrases and a speech entirely in Spanish by California Assemblyman Abel Maldonado.
Outside the convention, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut hold a dinner in honor of Governor John J. Rowland and the Connecticut delegation. Relevant Links:
