Nebraska seeks changes to 'squaw' names

FEBRUARY 15, 2001 The Chadron Native American Center in Chadron, Nebraska, will help the Dawes County Commission rename four "squaw" name sites as part of a statewide effort to remove the term considered offensive by many Native Americans. Governor Mike Johanns has asked counties to rename public places with "squaw" names but at least one county, McPherson, has decided not to rename "Squaw Creek." The stream is small, doesn't appear on most maps, and officials there say it honors Native women who died there. Get the Story:
