The House Armed Services on Wednesday voted to keep the firing base on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques open until the Navy can find an alternative site.

The action would prevent the Navy from ending bombing of the range by 2003 unless an "equivalent or superior" location is found elsewhere. Responding to complaints, President Bush in June called on the training in Vieques to stop.

The Vieques provision is part of a $329 billion spending bill for the Pentagon.
