JANUARY 26, 2001 ON THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT:
"I support the Endangered Species Act and the preservation of endangered species. I've been privileged to work on the protection of species like the California condor, on the endangered fish species in the Colorado River. I think we've seen some accomplishments there that hopefully will allow those species to survive, so I do support that." (Response to Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.). January 18) ON THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT, PART 2:
"The brief that I filed dealt with one small portion of the act, with one provision of the act, not with the entire act. . . It did not challenge the constitutionality of the entire Endangered Species Act. . . Undermining that entire act is not the thing that we were attempting to do. The concept of preserving endangered species is something that I view as very important. Its one of the responsibilities of the Department of Interior that I will vigorously pursue." (Response to Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) on losing a court challenge to the law. January 19) ON FORMER INTERIOR SECRETARY JAMES WATT:
"Senator, that is difficult for me in a respect that you might find surprising. And that is, I don't know everything that Jim Watt thinks about issues. I have only, really, spoken with him once in the last 10 years. . . I think we might have issues in common, but in the 20 years since I worked at Mountain States Legal Foundation at the same time Jim Watt did, I've had a lot of different experiences. . . I think the reality of who I am is different from the characterization of who Jim Watt his. I mean him no disrespect, but I am my own person." (Response to Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) when asked to name a policy difference between her and Watt. January 19) Relevant Links:
