Parties get ready for showdown

NOVEMBER 20, 2000

The Republicans and Democrats are gearing up for a court battle today as each seeks to influence the Florida Supreme Court on whether or not to force Secretary of State Katherine Harris to include updated vote counts in her final certification.

With Texas Governor George W. Bush in the lead by over 900 votes, the Republicans want Harris to bring an end to the debate. Now that the overseas ballots are counted, only the manual recounts prevent Bush's Presidential victory, counts the Republican party alleges are prone to fraud.

The Democrats, on the other hand, want to ensure every vote is counted. They also want to the court to develop a standard for recounting, but that may not assuage Republican fears.

Broward County is more than halfway through its manual recount and Palm Beach County is nearing the halfway mark. Miami-Dade will begin a massive recount of more than 650,000 ballots today.

NBC, CBS, and Fox will offer today's 2PM hearing, but each local affiliate will decide whether or not to air it. The cable networks CNN, MSNBC, C-SPAN, and Fox News Channel will air it live.

Internet users can view it online at the C-SPAN web site.
