DECEMBER 15, 2000

The New London Day reports today that officials in Connecticut have raised concerns about the revised tribal consultation executive order recently signed by President Bill Clinton.

"We're concerned because that can lay the groundwork for future actions," Nicholas H. Mullane II, First Selectman of North Stonington, told The Day.

Clinton signed the revised order last month, directing federal agencies to consult with tribal governments on issues that affect them. However, The Day doesn't report that the order was preceded by a simliar one in 1998, as well as an executive memorandum in 1994.

The paper also doesn't report if it asked Mullane or other officials about their awareness of the previous orders. The paper also doesn't point out that the order, as well as another one, requires agencies to consult with local and state officials about the same issues.
