Future of wildlife refuges questioned

The future of the nation's more than 500 national wildlife refuges is a hot topic now that Gale Norton has taken the helm at the Department of Interior.

Long-neglected, America's wildlife refuges sit in a different status than national parks and monuments. But in recent years, a number of lawmakers on both sides of the aisles have taken steps to increase funding and improve the condition of the refuges.

It takes acts of Congress to open up refuges to development and environmentalists fear the Bush administration will push for exploration, particularly in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
