A proposal to build a Wizard of Oz theme park at the Sunflower Army Ammunitions Plant in Kansas may be dead, but tribes with connections to the abandoned still want it protected.

Seven tribes showed up to a meeting held Tuesday night to discuss the issue. Before the U.S. General Services Administration can dispose of the surplus property, it must identify sites of historic or cultural significance.

The Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma is asking the property be taken into trust. Formerly a part of the Cherokee Nation until it was legislatively recognized last year, the tribe has no trust land of its own.

The developers of a $861 million Oz theme park have all but failed in their attempt. Gov. Bill Graves said he sees no future for the project in his state.
