Vatican moves to limit Indian deacons

TUESDAY, MARCH 12, 2002 The Vatican has ordered a five-year moratorium on new deacons in the heavily Indian state of Chiapas, Mexico. In a letter to the Diocese of San Cristóbal de las Casas, populated by Tzeltal Indian communities and Zapatista rebels, the Church said it was concerned about the large number of deacons. The Vatican also said the diocese could be setting a bad example for indigenous communities elsewhere. Get the Story:
