The Washington, D.C., city council has passed a resolution calling on the Washington Redskins to change its name because it is offensive to American Indians.

At large member Carol Schwartz, a Republican, was responsible for the resolution. She has now taken her fight to the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, which she chairs, but the group did not act on it.

The trademark on the team's name was revoked by the federal government after Native leaders proved to a court it was disparaging.
