THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2002 A bipartisan but mostly Democratic group of House members told President Bush in a letter on Wednesday that his executive order banning forced unionism deprived government employees of their rights. In one of his first actions in office, Bush banned forced unionism for federal contractors. A federal judge, however, has overturned the order. But last month, Bush did the same at four Department of Justice agencies, citing national security concerns. The lawmakers said his reasoning was an anti-labor guise. The anti-forced union laws of San Juan Pueblo in New Mexico were upheld by a federal appeals court this month. The tribe fears labor interests will ask the Supreme Court to strike down the ruling.
