GOP asks to stop new N.M. districts

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30, 2002 In a seemingly non-ending battle over political turf, Republicans in New Mexico have asked a federal court to revoke a judicially-approved map for the state's House districts. A state judge had just approved a map last week after considerable trial testimony. The map included six majority-Indian districts, drawn at the insistence of the Navajo Nation and the Jicarilla Apache Nation. But Republicans contend that map amounts to gerrymandering. While approving the six districts, they say the court has orphaned several reservations and has diluted Indian voting power. Get the Story:
