Cheney lawsuit on records 'highly likely'

The General Accounting Office (GAO) is close to suing Vice President Dick Cheney for his refusal to turn over documents related to the national energy task force he chaired.

In an interview with The New York Times, GAO Comptroller David Walker said it was "highly likely" he would file a lawsuit over Cheney's defiance. Walker had made his threat last fall but relented after September 11's terrorist attacks.

With the Enron scandal in high gear, though, the push to disclose industry contact with the task force has heightened. Cheney, however, remains committed to keeping the information private and said in a television appearance yesterday that the GAO was overstepping its authority.

Notification of the lawsuit could come early as Wednesday. It would be the first GAO has filed against a federal entity.
