FRIDAY, JANUARY 25, 2002

A New Mexico state judge on Thursday approved majority-Indian voting districts suggested by the Navajo Nation and Jicarilla Apache Nation.

District Judge Frank Allen Jr. in Albuquerque adopted the House districts by combining them with a political map that had been approved by the Democratic-controlled Legislature last year. Gov. Gary Johnson, a Republican, had vetoed the same map.

The map has six majority-Indian districts in northern and northwestern New Mexico. The Jicarilla Apache Reservation will be put into the same district with a number of Pueblos in Sandoval County.
