GOP Congressman has doubts on Yucca

The Bush administration's move to send the nation's nuclear waste to Nevada might have a more difficult time clearing the GOP-controlled House if sentiments voiced by a Congressional leader are any indication.

Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska), chairman of the House Transportation Committee, participated in a meeting yesterday over transportation funding issues affecting Nevada. When discussion turned to the Yucca Mountain project, he said he was close to voting no because he fears transporting highly radioactive waste on the nation's highways could be dangerous.

Congress has the power to overturn the recommendation. Democrats who control the Senate hope to stop the project.
