Census ordered to release adjusted count

A federal judge in Oregon on Wednesday ordered the Census Bureau to release a statistically adjusted count from the Census 2000.

The government has so far declined to release the numbers, saying the unadjusted data has been incredibly accurate. But minority and civil rights groups contend the raw numbers understate underserved segments of the population, including Native Americans.

Unadjusted numbers have been used for political redistricting and to distribute federal funds to states and local governments.

Despite the accuracy of last year's count, Native Americans on and off reservations had the worst combined net undercount.
