Enron generates another scandal

WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2002

Enron the Sequel took a hold of Congress, the White House and California on Tuesday as lawmakers, President Bush and politicians reacted to apparent market-gouging by the bankrupt company.

Democrats blamed Republicans for lax regulations of the energy market. The Bush administration said the uncovering of documents detailing the company's practices was proof of its commitment to the investigation of Enron.

Gov. Gray Davis (D) of California sent out a press release. A former company executive made $45 million on off-the-book partnerships, more than twice previously thought, a Senate committee was told.

And White House counsel Albert Gonzales failed to respond to an Enron-related deadline sought by Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.), whose committee is investigating the company.
