TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 2002

Maine Gov. Angus King on Monday made good on his promise to veto a bill that would pave the way for Indian gaming in the state.

The bill would have allowed the Passamaquoddy Tribe to buy land and have it taken into trust. This facility would be located in Calais, in eastern Maine.

Separately, the tribe and the Penobscot Nation are looking at a casino in Kittery, which is in southern Maine. The tribes have created a board of directors to push the facility.

King opposes all types of gaming.
