Residents of southeastern Connecticut are mobilizing to oppose a plan by the Mohegan Tribe to start a shellfish fishery on federal waters.

The tribe has applied for federal permits to place lobster traps and other fishing equipment in various waterways. But local fishermen and boaters say the equipment will block their access.

The Army Corps of Engineers has held a public hearing on the proposal. The tribe's application is still under consideration and may be delayed until early next year.

The tribe views the venture as an economic development vehicle.
