Cherokee Nation warns of fraud

AUGUST 4, 2000 The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is warning tribal members that a bogus Cherokee group is issuing fradulent car tags. The group, however, claims they are legitimate. Meanwhile, local authorities say any cars with invalid car tags can be towed. The Cherokee Nation is planning to issue their own car tags in order to raise revenue for the tribe and for school districts in the nation's 14-county region. Fifteen Oklahoma tribes sell their own car tags, which typically cost less than the state's. But the state is considering lowering its own car tag rate. The Cherokee Nation wants to enter into a compact with the state in order to ensure the validity of their tags in other states. Get the Story:
