Idaho tribes change gaming initiative

THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2001 In response to concerns raised by Attorney General Al Lance, tribes in Idaho have changed a voter initiative they hope will bring expanded gaming to Indian Country. The Coeur d'Alene and Nez Perce tribes began their effort after the state Legislature failed to ratify compacts they negotiated with Governor Dick Kempthorne. The tribes are following a model in California. Once Lance saw the initiative, he authored a non-binding review saying it could result in legal challenges. To address the concerns, the tribes made some changes to the language of the initiative and the title. To put the issue on the November 2002 ballot, the tribes need 40,000 signatures. Get the Story:
