Calista Corp.will be appealing a Department of Housing and Urban Development decision which denied the Alaska Native Corporation's attempt to start a housing authority using federal funds.

Calista says HUD's denial was made incorrectly under the Native American Housing and Determination Act. HUD rejected the $5.8 million plan because it didn't meet the act's requirements.

Calista says it won't change its plan when it appeals the decision. A regional Native village group opposes Calista's plan because it would receive only $1.6 million of the proposed amount.

HUD's Native housing programs have come under scrutiny in recent years, forcing a shakeup in leadership. An audit issued in March also criticized HUD for improperly approving a housing proposal by Cook Inlet Region, Inc., another Alaska Native corporation.
