Winnebago Tribe discusses gas tax

MAY 23, 2001 Lance Morgan, CEO of Ho-Chunk Inc., the economic development corporation of the Winnebago Tribe, met with Nebraska officials on Tuesday to discuss the tribe's gas tax. The tribe last December began collecting its own 3-cent sales tax, foregoing the state tax. The state has been weighing if this is legal under federal law. The Nebraska Legislature is considering a bill to authorize Governor Mike Johanns to negotiate tax compacts with tribes. Other states elsewhere have such compacts in which tribes collect sales taxes that are usually directed back into a tribal fund. Get the Story:
