An attorney representing 300,000 American Indian beneficiaries to the Individual Indian Money (IIM) trust said the latest round of sanctions in the ongoing case won't cost taxpayers as much as last time.

Native American Rights Fund attorney Keith Harper said the amount would be less than $600,000 for fees incurred responding to motions a federal court agreed were groundless stall tactics. That number comes from the Clinton administration's contempt trial in early 1999.

U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth still has to rule on the Bush administration's contempt, though. Attorney Dennis Gingold said he believes the amount could run in the millions of dollars
