TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 2002 The Department of Interior's top inspector has recommended a new official be put in charge of law enforcement, reports The Palm Springs Desert Sun. A January 14 investigation prepared by Inspector General urges Secretary Norton to create a deputy assistant secretary for law enforcement. This official would oversee department-wide law duties, including those at the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The recommendation was contained in a report which found the department's law enforcement capabilities to be in a crisis. No one listened when suggestions were made to improve the system, the paper says. The paper also reports that many officials have little or no law enforcement training or experience. Get the Story:
