The Duwamish Tribe of Washington is prepared to sue if its federal recognition petition is denied, an attorney said.

Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb last September signed a final determination against acknowledgment of the tribe. He reversed a finding by former acting Assistant Secretary Michael Anderson.

Anderson agreed to recognize the tribe on the last day of the Clinton administration but failed to sign three documents, according to an internal report made public last week. He signed the documents on January 22, 2001, the first day of the Bush administration.
