An Alaska state judge on Friday struck down the state's English only law as unconstitutional.

The law was passed as the result of a 1998 voter initiative barring government business from taking place in any other language but English. The Native American Rights Fund and the Alaska Civil Liberties Union challenged the law on behalf of Native villages, teachers and state tourism workers.

A supporter of the law said an appeal is planned.
