Nipmuc bands not joining

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 2002

Two Nipmuc bands in Massachusetts are not joining together to form one tribe for purposes of federal recognition.

The Chaubungungamaug Band of Nipmucs is disputing a report by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, which said the band was joining with the Nipmuc Nation. The paper based its report on a town official, who heard the news from an attorney, who now says he was misunderstood.

The Nipmuc Nation received preliminary recognition on the final day of the Clinton administration but the decision was revoked by Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb last fall. The Chaubungungamaug Band has received negative findings by both administrations.

The comment period on the two petitions is set to close April 1.
